There are 38 state-funded universities and equivalent institutions in Sweden. Here education is divided into two types, universities and university colleges. However, university colleges refer to the institutions that focus on technical and professional training in the areas of applied sciences and related subjects. These universities most likely do not award a Ph.D. degree.

A student is eligible to apply for Ph.D in Sweden if they meet the criteria below:

A university degree equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or higher with a focus in the same subject as the intended field of study

Good command of English (speaking and writing)

Doctoral studies in Sweden takes one of the study routes. One can either choose to pursue a Ph.D for four years which includes full-time course work. On completing four years of course work, a student is awarded a full doctorate. The academic year in Sweden runs from August to June with two teaching terms (August to January and January to June) Most of the Ph.D students are subject to an employment contract with their university. The Swedish currency is the Swedish Krona. International students open a basic bank account which helps them pay their bills using a card or mobile payments
